A bone augmentation treatment in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMF) is a surgical procedure that aims to restore or build up lost bone in the oral and facial region. This type of treatment is often necessary when patients have insufficient bone density due to tooth loss, injury, bone disease or other medical conditions, for example to support dental implants or to make aesthetic corrections.
In order to anchor implants securely and permanently, sufficient bone in the jaw area is of crucial importance. In some cases, however, the jaw bone lacks the required height or width, whether due to regression or congenital weakness.
In such situations, jaw bone augmentation can be the solution. This procedure usually involves adding bone material to the affected areas, either by using the patient's own bone or natural bone replacement materials. After a certain healing period, the jawbone is strong enough to safely accommodate an implant. In some cases, simultaneous implant placement can even be performed during jawbone augmentation.
Jaw bone augmentation is a proven method of offering patients whose jawbone does not have the ideal structure for implants the opportunity to benefit from the advantages of modern dentistry. Your oral surgeon will assess your individual situation and recommend the appropriate procedure to ensure that your implants are successful and permanent.
The process of bone augmentation for implantation begins with a preliminary examination, during which X-rays or 3D imaging are taken to assess the condition of the bone. The procedure itself is performed under local anesthesia. If bone material is missing, it is filled with either autologous, synthetic or a combination of both materials. In some cases, the material is stabilized with a membrane to support the healing process. The procedure is followed by a healing phase of several months during which the bone grows together with the inserted material. As soon as the bone has regenerated sufficiently, the dental implant can be inserted safely.
A complete treatment usually requires 3 to 4 visits: the first for the examination and planning, the second for the bone augmentation procedure, the third for the implantation and the fourth for the final check-up. In addition, several follow-up visits are necessary during the healing phase to monitor the progress of bone growth and ensure that everything is healing properly. These follow-up visits typically take place every few weeks to months and can vary depending on the individual healing process.
