Jaw cysts are fluid-filled cavities that can occur in the jawbone or soft tissue of the mouth. Although they are usually benign, they tend to grow and can potentially become problematic. For this reason, it is often advisable to treat and remove jaw cysts.
The removal of a jaw cyst is called a cystectomy. During this surgical procedure, the cyst is completely removed. After removal, the resulting cavity usually fills through natural healing processes. In cases of larger cysts, it may be necessary to fill the cavity with bone substitute material to restore the stability of the jawbone.
In some cases, particularly with smaller cysts, it may be sufficient to open the cyst (cystostomy) to drain the fluid contained within it. This reduces the pressure inside the cyst and stops its further growth.
Deciding on the best course of action depends on the type and size of the cyst as well as individual factors. Your oral surgeon will advise you in detail and recommend the appropriate treatment option to maintain your health and oral function.
