Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, also known as nose correction, is a surgical procedure to change the shape or function of the nose. It is performed both for aesthetic reasons and to improve nasal breathing, for example in the case of a crooked nasal septum or functional limitations.
Depending on the individual findings, the correction is performed open or closed, under general or local anesthesia. The healing phase usually lasts a few weeks, with swelling and bruising subsiding after a short time. Careful planning and professional execution are crucial for a harmonious and natural result.
Reasons for a rhinoplasty
Many people opt for rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of their nose. Common requests include reducing the size of the nose, changing the tip of the nose, straightening the bridge of the nose or refining the nostrils.
Rhinoplasty may also be necessary to improve breathing, e.g. in the case of a deviated septum or after nasal trauma such as a hernia.
Procedure of the intervention
The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes between 1 and 3 hours, depending on its complexity. The surgeon shapes the nasal bone and cartilage structure to achieve the desired shape and function. There are two main techniques:
- Open rhinoplasty: A small incision is made on the underside of the nose to give the surgeon a better view of the structures.
- Closed rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nose, leaving no visible scars.
Recovery phase
After the operation, you should be prepared for a recovery period of around 1 to 2 weeks. During this time, swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes may occur. A plaster cast or nasal splint is often applied for a few days to stabilize the nose. Most patients can return to work after about 1 week, but should avoid strenuous activities for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
Results
The final results of a rhinoplasty are often only fully visible after several months, as the swelling gradually subsides. The goal is a natural, harmonious nose shape that suits your face and, if necessary, improved nasal breathing.
Advice and planning
Before a rhinoplasty, a detailed consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon is essential. During this consultation, your wishes and expectations will be discussed and the surgeon will explain to you what is realistically possible. Good preparation and an open discussion about your motivations will help to achieve the best possible result.
Rhinoplasty can significantly increase self-confidence by supporting the harmonious appearance of the face. At the same time, it can correct functional problems of the nose and improve quality of life.
