Jaw angle recontouring is a surgical procedure that aims to create a sharper and more defined jawline. Excess bone can be removed or, if necessary, supplemented with implants to give the face a more prominent contour and better proportions.
For example, if you feel that your lower face looks too wide and square and you are looking for a long-term solution to achieve a slimmer facial shape, jaw contouring surgery may be an option. Squareness of the face can be caused by a variety of factors, which can be related to the configuration of your chewing muscles as well as the lower jaw bone. By reducing the jaw angle and making minimally invasive changes to the chewing muscles, for example, a more feminine lower jaw shape can be achieved (V-line surgery).
However, if you are faced with the opposite problem, that your jaw is not sufficiently defined and you are concerned that your lower face is too narrow, facial implants with a customized jaw angle can offer a good contouring option. Here, the implants are designed to be placed on top of the bone and underneath the jaw muscles, eliminating the need for bone surgery. In fact, a defined jaw angle is a youthful facial feature that we can lose as we age due to the bony changes that slowly occur throughout our lives.
A low-radiation CBCT scan of your face is taken for careful surgical planning. Jaw surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours, but sometimes longer if additional procedures are required.
As a rule, an incision is made intraorally so that no visible scars remain. From there, access is gained to the lower jaw, also known as the mandible. The lower jaw can be reshaped using various techniques. Depending on your anatomical conditions and cosmetic wishes, PD Dr. Dr. Safi can recommend the best possible treatment for you.
The ability to chew and swallow food or to speak is not affected by such an operation. As with any other oral surgery, the initial swelling is a reason why chewing strength is somewhat limited, but the muscles regenerate within a few weeks.
Patients can usually return home after the procedure. You will be given a face bandage for the first few days, which you can remove at any time. The swelling will largely disappear within the first 2 weeks. If there is any pain, we will prescribe the appropriate medication according to our internal pain management plan. Numbness in the lower jaw and lips may occur, but this is reversible and therefore not permanent.
We recommend activating the metabolism at an early stage, for example by going for walks from the first postoperative day. You should increase the load carefully but gradually, but please avoid strenuous activities at all costs. A soft diet without chewing is recommended for the first 2 weeks. Most of our patients can return to work 1 to 2 weeks after the operation.
