Injuries to the face, whether bony or soft tissue, are one of the most common accidents and happen in a wide variety of situations, whether during sport, traffic or at work.
Facial injuries can often be complex and lead to fractures that need to be treated by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. PD Dr. Dr. Safi has extensive expertise in this area and always operates on or reconstructs facial injuries from a functional and cosmetic perspective.
First and foremost, these are bone fractures that must be treated surgically, as the affected bone fragments will otherwise grow together in an incorrect position. The following regions are most affected:
To accurately diagnose a facial injury, Dr. Dr. Safi can use a physical examination and low-radiation three-dimensional X-ray technology to assess the damage and create an individualized surgical plan.
These are often carried out under general anesthesia and internal incisions are usually sufficient to ensure scar-free healing. It is rarely necessary to make small, very fine incisions in the skin. PD Dr. Dr. Safi places these in the area of the skin tension lines so that these incisions are also barely visible over time.
Each injury and each patient requires a customized plan based on an accurate clinical radiological assessment. Wires and plates are usually used to reposition the broken bone fragments and fix them in place for proper healing. Additionally, for dental injuries, plastics and special splints may be used to allow for optimal healing. Nose operations are usually treated primarily without an incision.
You will be given a prescription for medication to treat pain and swelling to take during this time and may be asked to stick to a no-chewing diet for your initial recovery. Generally, any supportive plates or screws used during surgery will be left in place permanently unless complications or discomfort arise.
